The Father of Horror Anime: Junji Ito

    November 2, 2022 / No Comments

Written by Mace Elsher Introduction As we approach the spooky season and Halloween is on everyone’s mind, good spooks and screams are expected with the Fall season. Many individuals do not enjoy horror or thriller, which is okay too! Nothing wrong with taking a stroll through a pumpkin patch, enjoying a hot cider, and watching romantic comedies on the Hallmark channel. For someone like myself, though, I want the thrill of a good scare. There is nothing better than sitting down with a bowl of popcorn and watching a horror or thriller movie to put me on the edge of my seat. In recent years, I have felt that the…

Genderfluidity and The Importance of Magic in the Viking Age: 750-1050 BCE

    November 2, 2022 / No Comments

Written by Mace Elsher Jacob Bell offers a different approach to interpreting the past as he begins with an introduction of the storming of Capitol Hill in the U.S.A on January 6th, 2021. A strange event to consider when approaching the subject of queer Vikings and women from 750-1050 CE. Nevertheless, Bell explains how symbols, iconography, and religious aspects of practitioners of Heathenism and Ásatrú (“belief in the Æsir”); are abused by the alt-right. With any radical group that twists religion comes anxiety for those who worship and practice Ásatrú, who do not share these alt-right views and are lumped together with neo-Nazis and fascist groups. Bell’s paper seeks to…

    Origins of Popular Superstitions

    November 2, 2022 / No Comments

Written by Mace Elsher Spooky season is approaching, and some of us have already begun. I am an avid Halloween fan and enjoy watching horror-themed content. Nothing is wrong with wanting a good scare, nor is there anything wrong with embracing the fall weather. However, before movies like The Blair Witch Project (1999), Carrie (1976), Get Out (2017), Halloween (1978), or The Hills Have Eyes (2006) were haunting our dreams, stories passed down for generations cursed our sleep and made us wary of the things that go bump in the night. Tales of old are what warn us of potential dangers that lurk in the night but are also filled…

Hunting Witches: Historical and Contemporary Wars on Women

    November 2, 2022 / No Comments

Written by Mace Elsher Introduction and Disclaimer The first thing that comes to mind about Witch Trials is the Salem Witch trials. The second thing that comes to mind is the dark and brooding history surrounding it. People rarely think of Scandinavia, Germany, Russia, or England in the context of witch hunting, despite its steeped origins in paganism and magic. Germany was known to be the “Heartland” of witch-hunting that influenced its European neighbors in their methods of hunting witches. This article will examine witchcraft and witch-hunting origins in differing countries and discuss the significance of historical and contemporary wars against women because of witch-hunting. I will give a disclaimer…

    Change

    October 1, 2022 / No Comments

Written by Mace Elsher Is there a better simile to describe change? Change can come in small waves, like your favourite TV show changing time slots. Change can come in medium waves, like replacing clothes that have served their purpose. Change can come in large waves, like moving to a different city unknown to you. Finally, change can come in massive hurricanes and storms, like losing a loved one, losing a job, being ostracised from a friend group, being scorned by family, or losing a home. But, change can also be a positive force. Gaining a new friend, adopting a pet, getting a new car, a new job, finding love,…
