Edmonton soul, blues and roots collective Secondhand Dreamcar released their sophomore album, Get Ready, on Sept. 25.
The nine-piece group returns following the success of its debut album, Answer the Call, which earned a JUNO Award nomination for Blues Album of the Year. The band has also received nominations from the Canadian Blues Music Awards and Western Canadian Music Awards.
Get Ready builds on the band’s blend of soul, blues, rock, gospel and funk while exploring themes of love, relationships, change and learning to let go of expectations. Much of the album was recorded live off the floor in an effort to capture the energy and spontaneity of the band’s performances.
“When I remember all of the hopes and dreams I had when I was younger, it pleases and amuses me to note that things have turned out so much more interesting than I ever could have envisioned back then,” said lead vocalist Dana Wylie.
The nine-track album includes the lead single “I Don’t Want Anything From You,” a ’70s soul and funk-inspired track about finding friendship and freedom after the end of a romantic relationship. Other tracks include “Take Your Mind Off It, Baby,” the title track “Get Ready” and a reinterpretation of Bob Dylan’s “Meet Me in the Morning.”
Secondhand Dreamcar is made up of Alberta musicians Dana Wylie, Chad Murphy, Bob Tildesley, Rooster Davis, Dave Babcock, Harry Gregg, Kyle Mosiuk, Jamie Cooper and Olivia Menard. The group has performed at festivals including the Edmonton Folk Music Festival and Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival.
Following the album’s release, Secondhand Dreamcar will continue touring throughout Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia through the end of 2026, with additional Alberta dates scheduled for 2027.
