0 Long-time community leader becomes first marshal selected through public nomination process
A lifelong community builder with deep roots in southern Alberta will lead one of Lethbridge’s most anticipated summer traditions. Knud Petersen has been named the 2026 Whoop-Up Days Parade Marshal, marking the first time the honour has been awarded through a community nomination process.
Petersen will officially kick off Whoop-Up Days by leading the parade through the streets of Lethbridge on August 18.
A Lifetime of Community Impact
Originally from Denmark, Petersen arrived in Canada in 1965 through an agricultural exchange program and settled in southern Alberta four years later. What followed was not only a successful career in potato farming, but decades of meaningful contributions to the community.
Petersen has played a key role in numerous organizations across the region. He is a founding member of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorn Booster Club and has been heavily involved with the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks Association, including helping coach the women’s soccer team to a national championship in its inaugural 1994 season.
His impact extends far beyond athletics. Petersen has served as a long-time board member and treasurer of the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame and has contributed to organizations such as the Southern Alberta Council on Public Affairs and the Lethbridge Food Bank. Through his efforts, he has supported hundreds of thousands of dollars in fundraising initiatives across the region.
“The Ideal Community Booster”
“Knud Petersen is the ideal of a perfect community booster,” says Paul Kingsmith, Director of Event Development at Excite Lethbridge.
“He is hands-on in his efforts to make Lethbridge a better place, never asking of others what he wouldn’t do himself. He is a constant presence at community events who rarely seeks recognition, despite truly deserving it.”
A Humbling Honour
Petersen says the recognition came as both a surprise and an honour.
“I was incredibly honoured and excited to be named Whoop-Up Days Parade Marshal for 2026,” he says. “As it sank in, I also recognized the responsibility of following in the footsteps of so many respected individuals.”
He added that he looks forward to celebrating alongside the Blackfoot Confederacy and the broader community during this year’s festivities.
Recognizing a Legacy
Over the years, Petersen has received numerous accolades for his contributions, including:
- Honorary degrees from both Lethbridge Polytechnic and University of Lethbridge
- Induction into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame and the Pronghorns Hall of Fame
- The 2019 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award
- The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022)
- The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers (2023)
His legacy is also reflected in the Knud Petersen Spirit in Sport Award, named in his honour by the Lethbridge Sport Council.
A Community-Driven Selection
This year marked a new approach for selecting the parade marshal, with Excite Lethbridge inviting nominations directly from the public. Petersen was chosen from more than a dozen submissions by a committee made up of past parade marshals and event organizers.

The 2026 parade theme, “Midway Magic,” celebrates the vibrant energy of the Whoop-Up Days midway—long a cornerstone of the festival experience.
More than just rides and games, the midway represents connection, excitement, and the shared spirit that brings the community together each year.
Event Details
The Whoop-Up Days Parade, presented by Park Place Shopping Centre, begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18.

Petersen joins a distinguished group of recent parade marshals, including the Morris Family (2025), Duane Kesler (2024), Corb Lund (2023), and the Chiefs of the Blackfoot Confederacy (2022).
