Canadian summer is the time of year when people hang up their coats in favour of light T-shirts or even dare to wear shorts and flip-flops outside of their homes. I recently had my first summer in Lethbridge, and I found myself constantly asking the question: “What do I do?” Save from the occasional outing, there didn’t seem to be a lot of activities, or at least, not for a young student like myself.
So I asked some of the students what they did in Lethbridge during the summer, and I quickly concluded that they didn’t do many fun activities. If they weren’t taking summer classes, they travelled—some back to their home countries, most back to Calgary or Edmonton.
So what is there to do in Lethbridge? Despite the fact that most students complain that “there’s nothing to do in Lethbridge,” a quick search on the City of Lethbridge website will give you quite the list of things, such as disc golf, fishing, parks, history, and beer tours… definitely things a student would do.
Despite these things, I believe there are a bunch of activities that can be done in Lethbridge during the summer. Perhaps, not as exciting as Calgary or Edmonton, but fun nonetheless.
Some people enjoy visiting the parks in the city. There are also places such as the “beach” (if I am allowed to call it that) at the Little Bow Community Park, and the one-floored Park Place mall, which is usually a center of attraction highly visited by people, including students. The Park Place Mall has places such as the Galaxy Cinema and the Game Arcade, where you can watch movies and play arcade games. Speaking of movies, the Movie Mill is another cinema house located in another part of the city, where students often visit to watch movies at cheaper rates.
I have it on good authority that downtown Lethbridge can be fun if you know where to go. Some places host nightly comedy shows, namely the Good Times Comedy Club, which can be a great way to spend a couple of hours and dollars. Galaxy Bowl and Holiday Bowl are also places some students go for bowling nights with friends. Then there are bars and clubs, which some people go to on nights to have fun and party. Of course, Friday and Saturday nights are the most lively.
One thing that seemed prevalent this summer was the various sports tournaments,such as the soccer summer league. Then, there were the inter-house sports and barbeque held by the North and South redeemed youth churches. During these, the attendees of the churches were divided into “houses” and competed against each other in various sporting activities such as races and tug of war. Food was shared and raffle prizes were drawn. I personally am a proud owner of a snow plower.
Of course, now that summer is over, students at the University of Lethbridge are hopeful for good things this semester. New classes mean new topics to grasp and new teachers to figure out. To all the students reading this, good luck in the new session!
