THUGS – The Historical Undergraduate Society
The Historical Undergraduate Society is a club dedicated to the study of history and connecting students to local historical resources. This year THUGS is stronger than ever. For the first time, we were sporting our own custom banner and flag at Rush Week. That’s right. We have a freakin’ flag. THUGS holds a variety of events ranging from history department meet and greets to Halloween cemetery tours. We often work with the history department so that we can hold workshops that will help students with study skills, essay writing, and overall success at the university level. Our more common events include movie nights, games nights, and tours to local and surrounding historical sites. Last year we went to Frank Slide and the cost to members was absolutely nothing! The Historical Undergraduate Society works to establish a strong rapport with first year students and make their transition from high school to university a smooth one. One way in which we do this is by offering peer editing of history papers. We also order “THUG-wear” ranging from t-shirts to coffee mugs so that you can display your THUG pride anywhere you go. A major goal of this year’s executive council is to partner with other clubs for events.
Upcoming events include Halloween cemetery tours on the evenings of Tuesday, Oct. 16 and Wednesday, Oct. 17. We want to get first year students into the Galt Museum as quick as possible, so a visit is tentatively scheduled for the end of October. November begins with capture the flag in the fine arts building. This is just one of the events that will be open to other clubs. Events beyond these are still in the works but will likely include a tour of Fort Whoop-Up and a year-end banquet.
Overall, THUGS is an essential resource for any history majors who wish to familiarize themselves with the department, meet people with similar interests, and enhance their skills in studying history. However, all students are welcome and encouraged to join. There is a fee of only $5. For more information, e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
